It’s a rainy spring morning here in Melbourne, Australia. The sky is a pale, glary grey mass of sheer clouds looming over the still trees. Bright red blossoms have appeared on the gum trees on our street, and the rainbow lorikeets are chattering happily as they feed on the flowers. A mass of daffodils are blooming in our front garden, in white, yellow and orange hues. They move a little in the gentle breeze. The cats are howling in their outdoor cat run. They begged all morning to go outside and now, having been granted their wish, are begging to come straight back indoors. (more…)
It’s a warm Thursday afternoon in the middle of the summer school holidays. The sun is shining, the cicadas are chirping, and I’m listening to classical music.
So, NaNo, hey?
35,928/50,000 words at the start of Day 16. Like, how?!
In previous years I would’ve been lucky to be 19,000+ words into writing by this stage. Maybe practice makes perfect. The more terrible novels I write, the slightly less terrible they become each time. But I’ve been drifting a bit and getting bored and yesterday spent too much time on MBTI introvert memes on Instagram. And I realised that a lot of the time, Introvert memes aimed at ISTPs tick me off. They often have this controlling tone about them, like one I read and reshared yesterday said, “ISTP: you will likely do something for someone rather than give compliments. Give praise. Some people need to hear your appreciation.”

Day 2’s writing session is about to begin. Today I’ll be writing about how two of my planned three main characters first meet.

I am trying (again) to take half-decent care of my health during NaNoWriMo. Otherwise, based on past experience, I get to the end of consistently stressful Novembers having gained unwanted weight, with sore wrists and a sore back and sore eyes from too much computer time, and I have to attend family Christmases feeling like I’m more a hideous potato goblin than a human. So I took half an hour to tidy up and get some washing done (reduces mess-induced stress) and another half hour to do some exercise before taking a seat in front of the computer. I’m still recovering from a couple of hours walking through steep mountainside bushland at the National Rhododendron Gardens on the weekend so the exercise was a chance to stretch out my sore legs and wake up my posture before writing for the day while the kids are at school.
